confluences - the Yellow River
confluences - the Yellow River
June 29, 2022

I can see how people chose the name for the Yellow River. It doesn't look yellow to me, exactly. More like an opaque khaki grey-green. But still. compared to the dark brown-green-blue-black of the Mississippi here, it's comparatively yellow.

I paddled up the Yellow a bit, looking for a place to get out. It's silty, not sandy, with muddy shores that want to take your feet down into them a good six inches.

This river comes into the Mississippi just downstream of the Effigy Mounds. Its contribution to the Mississippi is integrated surprisingly quickly, overwhelmed by all that other water.
