portfolio > tree portraits

Every tree is unique, just as every person is unique. I am printing "portraits" of particular trees, directly capturing the specific patterns of their bark.

Here's the process I'm using. I affix the paper to the outside of the tree as tightly as I can, then use different widths of ink rollers (called brayers) to capture the texture of the bark. It's essentially a cross between a rubbing and a pressure print. The result is a unique print of each tree, reflecting something of its particular character - its haecceity, or "thisness."

If you would like a portrait of a particular tree, I would be excited to work with you. Please get in touch with me at robingarwood@gmail.com or 612-385-3648.
