forest type as a function of height
forest type as a function of height
June 08, 2022

I noticed an interesting thing today: the type of forest on the shore is very dependent on the height of the land, in relation to the water. In this picture, the right bank is low and more or less inundated by standing water. The left bank, on the other hand, is up just a few feet over the surface of the water. Right bank: silver maples. Left bank: pines and a few birch. It got to the point where I could tell elevation at a glance by the color of the trees - that bright yellow-green of the silver maples means lowland, where the darker forest-green of the pines means a slight rise.
