The lower Mississippi has its bayous, but in high water conditions good portions of the northern Minnesota floodplain turn into something similar. Whole large stretches of what the map calls "land" are actually inundated to a depth between a few inches and a few feet. Flood-tolerant trees like silver maples and some oaks thrive here, with their roots entirely underwater. Rather than a strong demarcation between river and bank, the whole floodplain is essentially part of the river, water moving (perhaps a little more slowly) across the entire landscape.
