gone on the river
The first several dams on the Mississippi were made by beavers.
We tend to identify with apex predators, though that's not exactly what we are. We love bears, eagles, wolves, lions, tigers, sharks.
But really we're more like beavers. Rather than adapt to our environment (or rather than only or mostly doing so) we try to change our environment to suit our needs. We both see a river as something to be controlled, improved on. Something in need of intervention.
